As I sit here thinking about February being Heart Health Month. I can’t help but think about my dad. You see, he had an enlarged heart. I watched him outlive the doctors who predicted his death. He was one of the blessed ones who did not suffer with pain. Could some of this been prevented, who knows. But, what I do know is that we all can take better care of our heart. With that I present you with information on the heart.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. The good news? It is also one of the most preventable.  Making heart-healthy choices, knowing your family health history and the risk factors for heart disease, having regular check-ups and working with your physician to manage your health are all integral aspects of saving lives from this often silent killer.  

FEBRUARY IS HEART HEALTH MONTH.

Make a difference in your community by spreading the word about strategies for preventing heart disease and encouraging those around you to have their hearts check and commit to heart-healthy lives.

Did you know?

  1. Your heart is your hardest working muscle! 
  2. A female’s heart beats faster than a male’s heart. 
  3. Your heart is located in the center of your chest.

Heart Friendly Recipe:

Buffalo chicken salad wrap

Serves 4

Ingredients:

3-4 ounces of chicken breasts

2 whole chipotle peppers

1/4 cup white wine vinegar

1/4 cup low-calorie mayonnaise

2 stalks celery, diced

2 carrots cut into matchsticks

1 small yellow onion, diced (about 1/2 cup)

1/2 cup thinly sliced rutabaga or other root vegetable

4 ounces spinach, cut into strips

2 whole-grain tortillas (12-inch diameter)

Directions:

You can use leftover or rotisserie chicken if you have it. If not, preheat oven to 375 F or start grill. Bake or grill chicken breasts for about 10 minutes on each side until interior temperature is 165 F. Remove, cool and cube chicken.

In a blender, puree chipotle peppers with white wine vinegar and mayonnaise. Place all ingredients except spinach and tortillas in a bowl and mix thoroughly.

Place 2 ounces spinach and half the mixture in each tortilla and wrap. Cut each wrap in half to serve.

This quick-to-assemble, healthy wrap is a great way to use leftover chicken and to add vegetables to your diet.

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

  3. Are you treating your body like the temple it is?
